Why UFO Reports Need Exact Time and Place

A UFO report becomes scientifically testable only when investigators can determine exactly when and where the observation occurred. Without a precise timestamp and observing location, it is often impossible to compare a sighting with known aircraft movements, satellite passes, rocket launches, astronomical objects, weather conditions or local viewing geometry. The report may remain interesting, but it cannot easily be verified or ruled out.

The most valuable details include:
- Exact date and local time, including the time zone and whether the time came from a phone, watch, vehicle clock or later estimate.
- Start and end times, or the shortest possible time window if the witness is uncertain.

How small timing errors change possible matches

Ways to recover missing timestamps and coordinates
Witnesses often discover only later that they did not note the exact time. Investigators therefore try to recover objective information before relying solely on memory.
Useful methods include:
- Phone metadata from photographs or videos, which often records time and GPS location.
- Message histories, where a witness texted someone immediately after the sighting.
- Emergency calls or social media posts, which establish the latest possible observation time.
- Vehicle dashcams or home security cameras, which may contain timestamps.
- Smartwatch activity logs showing where the witness was.
- Maps and navigation history stored on mobile devices.
- Independent witness accounts, especially if recorded separately before discussion.
Older investigative guidance has long recommended exploring time uncertainty directly. Why investigators record uncertainty instead of false precision
Exact-looking numbers are not always accurate.

If those basic measurements are absent, investigators cannot reliably compare the account with aviation records, satellite databases or astronomical conditions. Conversely, when a celebrity report includes precise time, location and independently preserved photographs or videos with metadata, it becomes no different from any other potentially testable observation.
From an evidence perspective, the credibility of a UFO report depends far more on reconstructable time and place than on the fame of the person making the claim.
