Introduction
A video can show that an unidentified object crossed a camera’s field of view, but it cannot by itself reveal how fast that object was travelling. The missing ingredient is distance. Without a reliable measurement of range, the camera records only how the object’s position changes across the image, known as angular motion. A nearby object can appear to race across the frame while moving slowly, whereas a distant object can seem almost stationary despite travelling at very high speed. This is why authentic UFO footage, including military recordings, does not automatically support claims of extraordinary velocity or acceleration. Before analysts can calculate real-world performance, they must know the geometry of the observation: the object’s distance, the camera’s motion and orientation, and ideally corroborating measurements from multiple sensors. NASA’s independent UAP study and the US All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) both emphasise that insufficient geometric information is one of the main reasons many videos remain inconclusive.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
Angular motion is not the same as real motion
A camera measures angles, not distances. Each frame records where an object appears against the background, but it does not directly reveal whether that object is:
- small and nearby,
- large and distant,
- moving rapidly,
- or nearly stationary while the observing aircraft is moving.
Converting apparent movement into a true speed requires knowing the object’s range. Without that value, even precise measurements of how many pixels an object moves between frames cannot produce a unique answer.
This is a basic principle of geometry rather than something unique to UFO investigations. Two completely different physical situations can generate nearly identical video. A bird passing close to a camera may cross the frame just as quickly as a distant aircraft travelling hundreds of kilometres per hour because the nearby bird subtends a much larger angle as it moves.
NASA’s UAP Independent Study highlighted the importance of obtaining better calibrated observations, including range information and multiple independent measurements, precisely because existing reports often lack the data needed to reconstruct an object’s true motion.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
Size and range ambiguity create multiple valid explanations
The absence of reliable distance produces another uncertainty: size.
Suppose an object occupies ten pixels in a video. That observation alone does not reveal whether it is:
- a small object a few hundred metres away,
- a drone several kilometres away,
- or a much larger object at even greater distance.
Since speed depends on how far an object travels over time, uncertainty in distance directly produces uncertainty in speed.
The same ambiguity affects estimates of acceleration. A dramatic change in apparent direction may result from the camera platform banking, changing focal length or tracking the object rather than from the object itself executing a sudden manoeuvre.
Because several combinations of size, distance and motion remain mathematically possible, analysts cannot honestly report a single speed unless additional information removes those alternatives.
Why camera geometry matters
Determining an object’s trajectory requires reconstructing the geometry of the observation, including:
- the aircraft’s position and velocity,
- camera pointing direction,
- lens focal length or zoom,
- viewing angle,
- object range,
- and precise timing.
If any of these quantities are poorly constrained, uncertainty propagates through every subsequent speed calculation.
Military systems often record more information than is visible in publicly released clips. Even then, investigators may conclude that the available telemetry is insufficient to determine an object’s exact performance. Public videos usually contain substantially less information than the complete sensor record, making independent calculations even more uncertain. NASA similarly concluded that future investigations would benefit from higher-quality, synchronised sensor data specifically designed for scientific analysis.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
The GoFast video illustrates the problem
One of the clearest examples is the US Navy “GoFast” infrared video.
When the footage became widely known, many viewers interpreted the object as skimming rapidly over the ocean at extraordinary speed. However, that conclusion depended on assuming the object was very close to the water.
Subsequent geometric analyses reached a different interpretation. In congressional testimony, AARO explained that careful trigonometric reconstruction indicated the object was much higher—around 13,000 feet rather than just above the sea surface. Because the viewing geometry changed the perceived motion, the apparent high speed largely resulted from parallax rather than exceptional performance. Under that interpretation, the object’s estimated speed was dramatically lower than many early public estimates.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…
Whether every analyst agrees with every detail of that reconstruction is less important than the methodological lesson. The case demonstrates that changing only the estimated distance can transform an apparently extraordinary velocity into an ordinary one, without altering a single frame of video.
Why speed claims fail without reliable geometry
Extraordinary speed claims generally require three quantities:
- Distance, to convert angular movement into physical displacement.
- Time, measured from the recording.
- Viewing geometry, to separate object motion from camera motion.
If the first quantity is unknown, the calculation cannot produce a unique answer.
This explains why investigators are cautious when evaluating sensational claims based solely on video. A clip may genuinely show an unidentified object while still providing insufficient information to establish that it travelled at impossible speeds or performed physics-defying manoeuvres.
Modern investigations increasingly seek corroboration from radar, multiple cameras, telemetry, infrared sensors and other independent measurements because those additional data can constrain distance and geometry in ways that a single video cannot. AARO’s public case summaries repeatedly note that some recordings remain unresolved because the available imagery and supporting data are insufficient for confident performance analysis or identification.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…
What this means for claims that authentic footage proves aliens
Within the broader question of whether authentic UFO footage demonstrates extraterrestrial technology, missing distance is one of the most important limitations. A genuine recording may document a real object and still be unable to establish its true speed, size or acceleration.
Without reliable range measurements, apparently dramatic motion remains an observation of changing angles rather than a measurement of extraordinary flight performance. That distinction is why authenticity alone does not establish alien origin: before investigators can infer revolutionary technology, they must first solve the far more basic problem of determining where the object actually was in three-dimensional space.
