Introduction
John Lennon’s 1974 UFO sighting is unusually well documented for a celebrity account, but not in the sense that investigators possess photographs, radar data or an official case file. Its strength is historical: Lennon dated the event in the artwork of Walls and Bridges only weeks afterwards, described it publicly during 1974, and shared the observation with May Pang, who later published a detailed account. These records make it difficult to dismiss the story as a legend invented long after his death.
They do not reveal what Lennon actually saw. The surviving material establishes that two witnesses believed they watched a silent, illuminated object near Manhattan’s East River on 23 August 1974. It does not establish the object’s measured distance, dimensions, altitude, speed or origin. The case is therefore best understood as a well-attested report of an unidentified observation—not evidence that Lennon encountered an extraterrestrial spacecraft.
The Sighting and May Pang’s Account
Lennon was living with May Pang at 434 East 52nd Street during his separation from Yoko Ono. At about 9pm on Friday 23 August 1974, he went onto the terrace or rooftop area of their East Side penthouse and urgently called Pang to join him. Their descriptions broadly agree on the features that made the object seem unusual:
- a dark, circular or flattened-cone-shaped central body;
- numerous white lights flashing around its lower rim;
- a steady or brilliant red light on top;
- slow, controlled movement near the rooftops;
- no sound distinguishable above the city traffic.
Lennon described the centre as black or grey and the white lights as resembling ordinary bulbs blinking around the bottom. Pang’s later memoir account is more elaborate. She recalled a large object approaching them, apparently about the size of a Learjet, with so many rim lights that they were dazzling. She believed it passed at approximately rooftop height and was close enough to hit with a thrown object. Those estimates should not be treated as measurements. An observer cannot reliably calculate the size or distance of an unfamiliar object against the night sky without a known scale, measured angle or independently established position. Something small and nearby can appear similar to something much larger and farther away. Lennon and Pang’s conviction that the object was extremely close is an important part of their testimony, but the surviving record contains no geometry with which to test it.
Pang’s participation nevertheless distinguishes the case from a solitary celebrity anecdote. Lennon appears to have called her while the object was still present, rather than merely recounting the experience afterwards, and both witnesses described the same basic light arrangement and silent movement. That supports the conclusion that they shared a real visual experience. It does not determine whether they correctly judged the object’s structure, distance or behaviour.
Lennon Put the Claim on Record in 1974

That timing matters. Many famous UFO stories become detailed only through memoirs and retrospective interviews conducted decades later. Lennon’s note fixes a precise date and hour in a commercially distributed contemporary artefact. Lennon also discussed the object during the promotional period surrounding the album. In a self-interview published by Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, he drew attention to the UFO notice in the sleeve and answered joking questions about whether he had been drunk, high or undergoing primal therapy. The contemporary interview is valuable because its core description resembles the one Pang later gave: a dark centre, flashing white lights below, a red light above and movement near the East River. Yet it is still an interview account rather than instrumented evidence. Lennon’s certainty—often expressed as “I know what I saw”—shows confidence in the experience, not knowledge of the object’s identity.
The Report Entered Lennon’s Work
The Walls and Bridges inscription is a direct contemporary reference. Lennon’s later lyric about “U.F.O.s over New York” is culturally memorable but less useful for reconstructing the event.
“Nobody Told Me”, released posthumously as a single on 5 January 1984 and included on Milk and Honey, contains the New York UFO reference. The line therefore shows that UFO imagery remained part of Lennon’s view of New York years after the sighting. It cannot independently verify the observation. Songs compress experience, humour and exaggeration, and Lennon’s amused phrasing—he was “not too surprised”—is not a technical claim about what flew over Manhattan.
The album note is evidentially more significant precisely because it is so plain. It gives a date, a time and an assertion without embellishment. The song gives the incident its lasting place in popular culture; the sleeve inscription gives historians a near-contemporary record.
What Evidence Survives Today
The surviving evidence can be separated into three levels.

Corroborating witness testimony: Pang consistently maintained that she saw the object with Lennon and described a circular or flattened form, white rim lights, a red upper light and silent movement. Reported but unverified supporting material: Lennon and Pang said that photographs were attempted but produced no usable images. Accounts differ over whether the film was blank, overexposed or otherwise unsuccessful. They also said that police or newspapers told them other New Yorkers had reported something unusual. This last category is where retellings often become misleading. Claims range from seven additional witnesses to hundreds of reports, but the available articles generally trace those numbers back to Lennon, Pang or later secondary summaries rather than to a preserved police register or contemporary investigation. Without names, times, locations and original statements, the alleged additional sightings cannot be compared with Lennon’s observation.
The missing photographs are similarly inconclusive. Failed night photography was common with 1970s consumer cameras, especially when a bright light was surrounded by darkness. A blank or overexposed frame would neither confirm an extraordinary craft nor indicate that the object somehow interfered with the film. Because the negatives and camera settings are not available for examination, the photographic attempt adds narrative detail but no analysable visual evidence.
Can the Object Be Identified?
No persuasive identification has been demonstrated from the surviving record. Helicopters, aircraft, balloons, advertising devices and astronomical objects are all broad categories worth considering, but the available information is too imprecise to test any one of them properly.
Lennon and Pang rejected a helicopter because they heard no rotor noise, and Pang compared the red light with the aircraft they regularly saw heading towards Newark Airport. Those observations narrow the witnesses’ own interpretation but do not eliminate conventional possibilities. Sound can be affected by distance, wind, building geometry and competing urban noise. Apparent turns may reflect the observer’s changing perspective, while flashing lights can create an impression of a solid rim even when the underlying body is poorly visible. Conversely, simply labelling the object an aircraft or balloon without matching its position, route and appearance would be speculation.
A meaningful reconstruction would require at least the witnesses’ precise viewing position and direction, angular measurements, reliable duration and trajectory data, contemporaneous weather information, air-traffic or helicopter records, and independent observations from known locations. Modern official guidance makes the same basic point: investigators need original imagery with metadata, accurate time and position information, and data capable of establishing an object’s motion and physical characteristics. The Most Defensible Verdict
Lennon’s account is one of the stronger celebrity UFO records as a piece of documented cultural history. It was reported promptly, dated publicly, described more than once and supported by a second named witness. There is little reason to doubt that Lennon and Pang believed they saw something striking and unfamiliar over New York.
The case is weak as physical evidence. No usable image survives; no official investigative file has been produced; alleged additional reports cannot be independently compared; and the object’s distance, size and speed were never measured. Even the most vivid details depend on human perception under difficult viewing conditions.
The careful conclusion is therefore limited but meaningful: on 23 August 1974, John Lennon and May Pang reported a shared sighting of an illuminated object they could not identify. Lennon made that claim part of the contemporary public record. What the object was remains unresolved—not because the evidence demonstrates an extraordinary craft, but because too little testable evidence survives to distinguish among the possible explanations.
