Introduction
The infrared video recorded from a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft near Rafael Hernández Airport, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, on 26 April 2013 became one of the best-known modern UFO cases because it appeared to show an object racing across the landscape, entering the sea, emerging again, and even splitting into two. For years, those apparent manoeuvres were cited as evidence of technology beyond known aircraft.
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), however, concluded that the dramatic appearance was largely created by viewing geometry rather than extraordinary flight. What the Footage Appeared to Show
The original infrared recording seemed to depict several remarkable behaviours:
- An object moving at very high speed over Puerto Rico.
- A descent towards the coastline.
- An apparent entry into the water followed by re-emergence.
- A single object separating into two identical objects before disappearing offshore.
Viewed without detailed positional data, these observations appeared difficult to reconcile with ordinary aircraft or balloons. Because the video lacked obvious depth cues, many viewers naturally interpreted the object’s motion relative to the ground as its true speed.
The infrared imagery also contributed to the mystery. Thermal cameras record heat differences rather than visible light, making it difficult to judge size, distance and altitude from appearance alone. How Motion Parallax Changed the Scene
Motion parallax is an everyday visual phenomenon. As an observer moves, nearby objects appear to sweep rapidly across the background while distant objects seem to move much more slowly. From a fast-moving aircraft using a zoomed infrared sensor, this effect can become especially pronounced.
According to AARO’s reconstruction, three factors combined to create the illusion of exceptional speed:
- The aircraft itself was travelling quickly. Its forward motion continuously changed the viewing angle.
- The infrared sensor was highly magnified. Small changes in line of sight translated into large apparent movements across the image.
- The object was relatively distant and drifting slowly. Against the fixed landscape, the changing observation geometry made it appear to race over the terrain.
The result was an apparent ground speed far greater than the object’s actual movement. Why Reconstructed Geometry Altered the Conclusion
Rather than analysing the video frame by frame in isolation, investigators reconstructed the event using multiple sources of information.
The reconstruction incorporated:
- the Customs and Border Protection aircraft’s recorded position and flight path;
- the infrared sensor’s elevation, azimuth and viewing angles;
- Digital Systems Toolkit (STK) modelling to recreate the camera geometry;
- local meteorological data.
With those inputs combined, AARO concluded that the observed objects travelled in a straight line at approximately 3.6 metres per second (about 8 mph), closely matching measured winds of roughly 4.4 metres per second from the east-northeast. The reconstruction also changed other aspects of the interpretation. Instead of one object dividing into two, investigators concluded that two separate objects had been travelling near one another throughout the observation. Why the Object Never Entered the Water
One of the video’s most striking moments appeared to show the object diving beneath the ocean surface before emerging again, suggesting so-called “transmedium” travel.
AARO’s reconstruction reached a different conclusion. The model indicated that the objects remained over land throughout the recording, following a straight path consistent with wind drift. The apparent disappearance occurred because the infrared contrast between the objects and the background diminished as the viewing geometry changed, creating the illusion that they had entered the sea. What the Puerto Rico Case Demonstrates
The Puerto Rico video has become a useful illustration of why an unidentified object is not automatically evidence of advanced technology. Without accurate information about camera position, target distance and sensor orientation, even experienced observers can overestimate speed and misinterpret motion.
AARO’s assessment does not rely on dismissing the original recording as fabricated. Instead, it argues that the same video looks fundamentally different once its geometry is reconstructed.
