By the time she reached the terrace, she recalled seeing a large circular object approaching from the direction of the East River. The strongest feature of Pang’s testimony is not its level of detail but its agreement with Lennon’s own contemporary descriptions.

Both witnesses consistently reported:

This overlap matters because Lennon publicly recorded the sighting only weeks after it occurred by writing, “On the 23rd Aug. 1974 at 9 o’clock I saw a U.F.O.” on the artwork for Walls and Bridges. Limits of memory and visual estimation

Despite its importance, Pang’s testimony has clear evidential limits.

The most significant is that her fullest narrative appeared long after the event. Human memory is reconstructive rather than photographic, and eyewitness research consistently shows that confidence in a memory does not necessarily correlate with objective accuracy, particularly for unexpected events viewed briefly under poor viewing conditions.

Another limitation concerns estimates of size and distance. Pang’s statements that the object appeared comparable in size to a Learjet or close enough to strike with a thrown object are impressions rather than measurements. Without known reference points, angular measurements or independent tracking data, observers cannot reliably determine how large or distant an unfamiliar object is against the night sky. A smaller nearby object can appear similar to a much larger distant one.

Night-time viewing also complicates perception. Bright lights against a dark background reduce the observer’s ability to judge shape, speed and distance accurately. Pang’s account is valuable because it independently supports several historical conclusions.

It strongly supports that:

  • Lennon believed he saw something unusual immediately rather than inventing the story years later.

Overall assessment

May Pang remains the most important eyewitness alongside John Lennon because she was present during the reported event and consistently described many of the same unusual features over decades of interviews. Her testimony substantially strengthens the historical credibility of the claim that an unidentified aerial object was observed by both witnesses in August 1974.

At the same time, the reliability of her account has natural limits. Its greatest strength lies in corroborating that a shared visual experience occurred; its greatest weakness is that later recollections cannot overcome the inherent uncertainties of human memory and unaided night-time perception.
