Introduction
A genuine UFO video can faithfully record something that was really seen by a military or civilian sensor while still misrepresenting what that object actually looked like. This distinction is central to understanding why authentic footage does not, by itself, demonstrate extraordinary technology or extraterrestrial origins. Modern electro-optical and infrared systems do not simply “film reality”. They process signals, stabilise images, compress video and compensate for camera movement before an operator sees the final display. Each stage can introduce visual artefacts that resemble glowing halos, rotating craft, exhaust trails or sudden changes in shape. NASA’s independent UAP study and the US All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) both emphasise that sensor limitations and missing contextual data must be considered before interpreting unusual imagery.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
How infrared images are processed
Many well-known military UFO videos come from forward-looking infrared (FLIR) targeting systems rather than conventional daylight cameras. These sensors detect differences in thermal radiation rather than visible colour.
The image shown to an operator is therefore the result of several processing stages rather than a direct optical photograph. Typical processing includes:
- converting infrared intensity into a visible greyscale image;
- automatically adjusting brightness and contrast to keep targets visible;
- reducing noise from the detector;
- digitally stabilising the picture as the aircraft manoeuvres;
- compressing video for recording and transmission.
Each step changes how an object appears on screen. A hot aircraft engine may bloom into a larger dark or bright blob depending on the display polarity. Weak thermal signals may disappear completely when automatic contrast adjusts to brighter parts of the scene. An object’s apparent outline may therefore reflect processing choices as much as its true physical shape.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
This does not mean the object itself is imaginary. It means the recorded appearance is influenced by the instrument that captured it, much as a long-exposure photograph can make moving lights appear as streaks rather than points.
Common compression and tracking distortions
Some of the most dramatic features discussed in UFO videos are consistent with known characteristics of digital imaging systems.
Compression artefacts. Modern video codecs record changes between frames rather than storing every pixel independently. Under difficult imaging conditions, compression can create false edges, smearing or apparent wakes behind moving targets. AARO has publicly released examples where an apparent atmospheric trail behind an object was assessed to be a consequence of video compression rather than a physical phenomenon. After reviewing additional footage and comparing commercial flight data, investigators concluded the object was probably an ordinary aircraft.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…
Tracking behaviour. Military targeting pods continually rotate mirrors or optical assemblies to keep a selected object centred while the aircraft changes direction. The stabilised video shown to the operator hides much of this motion, but internal adjustments can interact with glare, diffraction or saturation effects. This can create the impression that the target itself is rotating even though part of the apparent motion originates within the imaging system. The interpretation of specific cases remains debated, but the underlying tracking mechanism is well understood.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
Digital zoom. Enlarging a distant object does not reveal new detail once the available pixels have been exhausted. Instead, edges become blockier, noise becomes more obvious and small fluctuations in brightness may appear as changing shapes or protrusions.
Automatic contrast adjustment. Infrared systems often rescale brightness continuously. As background temperatures change, the same object can appear to grow, shrink or alter its apparent intensity even if its physical properties remain unchanged.
Why strange shapes are not always real shapes
Readers often assume that a sharply defined silhouette in infrared footage represents the object’s actual structure. In practice, several optical effects complicate that conclusion.
When a target is extremely bright relative to the surrounding scene, detector saturation may enlarge its apparent size. Optical diffraction and internal reflections can also produce symmetrical patterns that are tied to the camera’s optics rather than to the object itself.
Similarly, heat sources rarely correspond exactly to an aircraft’s visible outline. Infrared cameras primarily record thermal emissions and temperature differences. A jet engine, heated exhaust plume or warm fuselage may dominate the image while wings or other cooler structures contribute little to the recorded signal.
Consequently, the visible thermal signature should not automatically be interpreted as the object’s physical geometry.
Separating object features from sensor effects
Investigators try to determine whether an unusual feature belongs to the object or to the imaging system by comparing multiple lines of evidence rather than relying on a single frame.
Useful questions include:
- Does the unusual feature remain fixed relative to the object or relative to the camera?
- Does it change when zoom, focus or viewing angle changes?
- Is the same effect reproduced on different sensors?
- Do radar, visual observers or additional cameras show the same behaviour?
- Can similar patterns be reproduced using known aircraft or imaging equipment?
This approach reduces the risk of mistaking instrument behaviour for extraordinary flight characteristics.
AARO has illustrated this principle in several case releases. Some videos initially reported as unidentified were later resolved as balloons or conventional aircraft after analysts combined infrared footage with longer recordings, telemetry and independent flight data. Other recordings remain unresolved because the available information is insufficient to distinguish confidently between a genuine object and possible sensor effects.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…
What this means for interpreting famous UFO footage
The presence of sensor artefacts does not prove that every famous UFO video has an ordinary explanation. Equally, authentic military footage does not guarantee that every unusual visual feature belongs to a remarkable object.
The strongest conclusions come from combining imagery with independent measurements such as radar tracks, precise range information, multiple viewing angles and complete sensor metadata. Without those supporting data, apparently impossible rotations, glowing halos, elongated wakes or changing shapes may reflect the interaction between distant objects and sophisticated imaging systems rather than evidence of exotic technology.
This is why professional investigators increasingly distinguish between an unidentified object and an unexplained image. A recording may accurately preserve what the sensor detected while still leaving open the possibility that some of its strangest visual characteristics originated inside the camera and processing chain rather than in the sky itself.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…
