On 27 April 2020, the Department of Defense issued a short press statement announcing the authorised release of three unclassified Navy videos: one recorded in November 2004 and two recorded in January 2015. That final sentence is often quoted incompletely. It confirmed the status of the observations within the investigation—not the nature or origin of the objects themselves.
What authenticity actually established about the recordings
The Pentagon’s authentication settled several factual questions that had circulated for years.
It established that:
- the three videos were genuine recordings made by US Navy aircraft sensors;
- the released files were authentic government material rather than fabricated or digitally manipulated clips;
- the Department of Defense had authorised their public release after review;

These are meaningful confirmations. Before the official release, debate often centred on whether the videos themselves were genuine. The Pentagon removed that uncertainty.
However, authenticity of a recording is different from authenticity of an interpretation. A genuine infrared video can faithfully record an event while still leaving open what produced the image or how particular visual effects should be interpreted.
