Introduction

Many famous UFO reports involve objects that were genuinely difficult to identify at the time but not inherently exotic. Aircraft flying in formation can appear to form one enormous craft; illumination flares can seem to hover; balloons can drift against the wind at ground level; and bright planets may appear to change colour, move or follow an observer. Poor depth perception, haze, darkness and incomplete flight data amplify the effect.

This distinction matters in celebrity UFO stories because a well-known witness may make an incident memorable without improving the underlying evidence. Kurt Russell’s connection to the Phoenix Lights and Jimmy Carter’s report of a colour-changing light are valuable eyewitness accounts, but the key question remains mechanical: what ordinary source could produce the reported appearance under those viewing conditions? Modern investigations repeatedly resolve well-documented cases as balloons, satellites, drones, aircraft or natural phenomena, while many others remain open simply because the available data are too limited for a firm identification.[NASA]nasa.govuap independent study team final report 0FRAMEWORK OF RECOMMENDATIONS Although AARO leads the whole-of-government response to UAP, the panel recommends that NASA play an essentia…

How Aircraft Become “Giant Craft”

At night, witnesses often see lights without seeing the aircraft carrying them. Human vision then tries to connect those lights into a single outline. Several aeroplanes maintaining a stable formation can consequently look like the illuminated corners of one immense triangular or V-shaped object.

Distance is especially difficult to judge against a dark sky. A witness who assumes that lights belong to one nearby object will infer a huge solid craft; someone who recognises several more distant aircraft will infer something much smaller and faster. Without a measured range, both apparent size and speed remain guesses. Engine noise is not a dependable correction because it may arrive later than the image, be carried away by the wind or be masked by traffic and urban sound.

The Phoenix Lights were more than one event

The Phoenix Lights of 13 March 1997 demonstrate how several ordinary mechanisms can become fused into one famous narrative. Reports collected across Arizona included an earlier V-shaped group moving south and a later line of bright lights apparently hanging over the Phoenix area. The later lights were linked to illumination flares released during an Air National Guard training exercise; the earlier observations remain more disputed, although aircraft flying in formation have been proposed as the source.[Disclosure Files]disclosurefiles.orgObservations clusterDisclosure FilesPhoenix Lights // DISCLOSURE FILESMay 7, 2026 — events The earliest reports came from witnesses in Henderson, Nevada, and…Published: May 7, 2026

That separation is important. Saying that “the Phoenix Lights were flares” is too broad because it treats every observation that evening as one event. Saying that no conventional explanation exists is equally misleading because the widely filmed later display has a strong, documented flare explanation. The case is better understood as a mixture of reports produced at different times, positions and viewing angles.

Actor Kurt Russell later said that, while flying into Phoenix, he reported an unusual formation of lights to air-traffic control. His involvement helped connect the event to celebrity culture, but it does not establish that every witness saw one physical object. From the ground, formation lights can preserve their geometry while the aircraft bodies remain invisible, creating precisely the impression of a dark shape connecting the lights.

Camera geometry can manufacture extraordinary motion

Modern military UFO videos illustrate a related problem: apparent movement may come partly from the observing platform and sensor. A camera with a narrow field of view can make a distant object seem to rush across the landscape when the aircraft carrying the camera is itself moving rapidly. Infrared glare can enlarge or distort a heat source, while image rotation may reflect the optics rather than the target.

The Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, or AARO, has used reconstructed flight paths, wind information and sensor angles to reassess several celebrated recordings. In the Puerto Rico case, an infrared video appeared to show a fast object splitting in two and entering the sea. AARO concluded that it instead showed two objects travelling close together at roughly wind speed, without entering the water. The apparent transformation arose from perspective and limited imagery rather than extraordinary propulsion.[AARO]aaro.milAARO UAP Case Resolution ReportsAARO UAP Case Resolution Reports All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) UAP Case Resolution Repo…

The same principle applies to eyewitness reports. A turning aircraft, a moving observer and a light seen without a visible horizon can produce apparent accelerations that the object itself never performed. Before treating rapid motion as a physical capability, investigators need the sensor’s position, orientation, field of view and tracking mode.

Why Flares and Balloons Seem to Hover

Flares and balloons are among the most productive sources of UFO reports because their motion does not resemble familiar powered flight. They may drift silently, remain visible for minutes and appear almost stationary when moving towards or away from the observer.

Flares create orderly lights without visible aircraft

Military illumination flares are designed to descend slowly beneath parachutes while producing intense light. At long range, the parachute and smoke may be invisible. The viewer sees only a glowing point that seems suspended in the sky.

Several flares released along an aircraft’s path can form a straight line or geometric arrangement. As each descends behind a ridge, cloud layer or atmospheric haze, it appears to switch off abruptly. This can resemble lights disappearing one by one from a structured craft. Changes in brightness caused by smoke, rotation or partial obstruction may also look like signalling.

The later Phoenix display fits this pattern particularly well: bright lights appeared over the same general region, descended slowly and vanished near the outline of distant mountains. Military confirmation that illumination flares were dropped during training provides an external explanation rather than one based only on resemblance.[Disclosure Files]disclosurefiles.orgObservations clusterDisclosure FilesPhoenix Lights // DISCLOSURE FILESMay 7, 2026 — events The earliest reports came from witnesses in Henderson, Nevada, and…Published: May 7, 2026

Flares do not explain every orange light or every report associated with a military range. Matching requires the correct time, direction, exercise area, aircraft activity and wind. Their value as an explanation lies in reproducing the observed behaviour, not in functioning as a universal label.

Balloons can look purposeful

A balloon carries no obvious wings, engine or exhaust, yet it can remain aloft for hours and change apparent direction as it enters winds at different altitudes. It may seem stationary when viewed head-on, then accelerate sideways when the geometry changes. Sunlight reflecting from a curved or partly transparent surface can create sudden flashes.

Clusters of balloons are more deceptive. Individual envelopes may overlap in a distant image, producing an irregular mass that appears to deform or divide. AARO’s analysis of a 2017 recording from Al Taqaddum Air Base in Iraq concluded with high confidence that an apparently anomalous floating object was consistent with a cluster of fully and partly inflated balloons.[AARO]aaro.milAARO UAP Case Resolution ReportsAARO UAP Case Resolution Reports All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) UAP Case Resolution Repo…

Roswell is the most culturally important example of balloon technology entering UFO mythology. The US Air Force’s historical investigation concluded that debris recovered in New Mexico in 1947 came from Project Mogul, a classified programme that used long balloon trains and specialised equipment in an attempt to detect Soviet nuclear tests. The unfamiliar materials, military secrecy and the Army Air Forces’ briefly issued “flying disc” announcement created ideal conditions for later extraterrestrial interpretations.[DAF History]dafhistory.af.milDAF History The Roswell ReportRichard L. Weaver and 1st Lt. James McAndrew to address the request made by Representative Steven H. Schiff (R-NM) for info…

The official Roswell account remains disputed by some researchers, particularly over later testimony and the reconstruction of individual balloon launches. Even so, the case demonstrates a broader mechanism: an ordinary class of object can become extraordinary when its purpose is secret, its components are unfamiliar and officials provide inconsistent explanations.

Atmospheric effects distort familiar objects

Haze, thin cloud, temperature layers and ice crystals can change how light reaches an observer. A distant lamp, aircraft or celestial object may appear enlarged, smeared, doubled or surrounded by a halo. Refraction can shift its apparent position, while turbulence causes rapid changes in colour and brightness.

These effects become most pronounced near the horizon because the light passes through more atmosphere. A white object may flash red, blue or green as different wavelengths are refracted differently. To someone watching without a stable reference point, those fluctuations can resemble a rotating or manoeuvring craft.

Clouds also remove context. An aircraft light seen intermittently through broken cloud can appear to jump between positions. A rocket plume illuminated by sunlight after local sunset can look like a glowing spiral or expanding luminous body because the exhaust remains in sunlight high above an observer already standing in darkness.

When Planets and Stars Appear to Move

Celestial objects are recurrent UFO candidates because they are bright, silent and visible for long periods. Venus is particularly troublesome: it is brighter than any star, commonly seen around dusk or dawn, and low enough on the horizon to be strongly affected by atmospheric distortion.

Jimmy Carter’s colour-changing light

Jimmy Carter reported that, before becoming US president, he and other people near Leary, Georgia, watched a bright light that seemed to approach, stop and change from white to blue and red before receding. The event became one of the best-known UFO reports by a political celebrity.

Venus has long been proposed as the explanation because it was bright and in the relevant part of the sky on a date associated with the event. A separate hypothesis links the observation to a high-altitude barium cloud released during a rocket experiment, which could have been illuminated by sunlight and changed appearance as it dispersed. The uncertainty partly reflects discrepancies over the sighting date and the absence of precise contemporary measurements. Carter himself rejected an extraterrestrial interpretation, even while maintaining that he had seen something he could not identify.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaJimmy Carter UFO incidentJimmy Carter UFO incident

The case shows why “identified as Venus” can be too confident when the date, direction or timing is uncertain. It also shows why a celestial explanation should not be dismissed merely because a witness reported movement or colour changes. Those impressions can be generated by the atmosphere and by the eye.

The autokinetic effect creates motion from stillness

A stationary point of light can appear to wander when viewed in darkness without surrounding reference points. This visual illusion, known as the autokinetic effect, occurs because tiny involuntary eye movements are interpreted as movement of the light itself.

The effect helps explain reports in which a star or planet seems to dart, sway or follow a vehicle. When the observer moves, nearby trees, clouds and window frames shift relative to the distant light, strengthening the impression that the light is keeping pace. Stopping the car may make the object appear to stop; turning may make it seem to change direction.

A bright planet can therefore produce a surprisingly elaborate sequence: apparent approach, hovering, pursuit and departure. None requires the planet itself to move unusually. The narrative emerges from changing lines of sight, atmospheric scintillation and the observer’s assumptions about distance.

Pilots are not immune to celestial misidentification

Experienced pilots have strong knowledge of aircraft but still operate under the same visual constraints as other observers. A bright planet low on the horizon may appear to sit at the aircraft’s altitude because the night sky provides no depth cues.

Japan Air Lines Flight 1628, whose captain reported unusual objects while flying over Alaska in 1986, remains contested. Investigators have proposed Jupiter and Mars as sources for at least some of the reported lights, noting their position near the relevant part of the sky. Critics argue that this does not account for every element of the account, including radar discussion and the captain’s description of a much larger object. The case therefore illustrates both the usefulness and the limit of astronomical matching: it can explain particular lights without necessarily resolving an entire multi-part report.[Wikipedia]WikipediaJapan Air Lines Cargo Flight 1628Japan Air Lines Cargo Flight 1628

Why Ordinary Explanations Are Often Missed

An ordinary source is easiest to recognise when the observer knows its distance, schedule and operating context. UFO reports usually begin with precisely those facts missing.

Several recurring problems turn familiar objects into apparent anomalies:

  • No reliable range: Without distance, a small nearby object and a large distant one may subtend the same angle in the sky.
  • No visible structure: Darkness hides wings, fuselages, balloon envelopes and parachutes while leaving lights visible.
  • Observer movement: A car, aircraft or moving camera can transfer its own motion to the target.
  • Atmospheric distortion: Haze and turbulence alter colour, shape and apparent position.
  • Incomplete contextual data: Classified exercises, delayed flight records or unknown balloon releases prevent immediate identification.
  • Narrative merging: Reports separated by minutes or kilometres may later be treated as sightings of one continuing object.

Official statistics show how heavily ordinary objects dominate cases that can actually be closed. AARO’s reporting data updated through June 2026 list balloons as just over half of resolved cases and satellites as roughly one-third, followed by drones, birds, aircraft and smaller categories such as rockets, natural atmospheric effects and sensor artefacts. These figures do not mean that the same proportions apply to every historical report; they show what tends to emerge when investigators obtain enough contextual information to reach an identification.[AARO]aaro.milUAP TrendsUAP Trends

The unresolved category requires equal care. In AARO’s 2024 annual report, hundreds of cases were archived because there was insufficient information for analysis. “Unresolved” therefore often means that no defensible conclusion can be reached, not that conventional explanations were eliminated.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govFY24 CONSOLIDATED ANNUAL REPORT ON UAP 508Department of WarFiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Annual Report on Unidentified Anomalous PhenomenaWAY FORWARD…

What Makes an Explanation Convincing?

A useful explanation must do more than name something common. It should match the report’s time, direction, duration, angular motion and appearance.

For an aircraft explanation, investigators look for flight tracks, formation procedures, navigation lights and the observer’s line of sight. For flares, they compare military activity, release altitude, burn time, descent rate, winds and terrain. Balloon analysis uses launch records, predicted drift and the object’s motion relative to the air. Astronomical checks reconstruct the sky for the precise date, location and time.

The strongest resolutions combine independent data. The later Phoenix lights are persuasive as flares not simply because flares look similar, but because a relevant military exercise occurred and the lights’ descent and disappearance were consistent with distant illumination flares. Roswell’s balloon explanation draws on programme documents, material descriptions and the historical context of a classified surveillance project. Modern video cases can be tested against sensor geometry and wind models.

A weak explanation, by contrast, relies only on superficial resemblance or ignores inconvenient parts of the record. “It was Venus” is not sufficient when Venus was in the wrong direction. “It was an aircraft” is not sufficient when no matching traffic existed. Ordinary explanations become credible through reconstruction, not repetition.

The Lasting Lesson of Famous Sightings

Famous UFO reports rarely become famous because they contain the best measurements. They become famous because they have vivid witnesses, memorable shapes, government secrecy, compelling footage or a celebrity connection. Those features increase cultural impact but can distract from the practical mechanics of identification.

Aircraft formations explain how separate lights become one imagined structure. Flares explain hovering rows that slowly vanish. Balloons explain silent drift, irregular shapes and apparent stops. Planets and stars explain brilliant lights that seem to move or change colour under poor viewing conditions. Atmospheric effects and camera geometry can transform all of them further.

None of this proves that every unresolved report has an ordinary answer. It establishes a more modest and useful point: extraordinary appearance is not the same as extraordinary behaviour. Before a famous UFO case can support a remarkable conclusion, investigators must first rule out the ordinary objects that the sky, the atmosphere and human vision routinely make unfamiliar.
